Due to a question on the tennis.com forums and in the context of the Isner-Mahut match, I compiled a list of matches going 5 sets at 2010 Wimbledon (thru Friday) and got some statistics. 24 matches have gone to 5 sets, and seeded players have 14-3 in those matches.
Other stats:
-In 16 of the 24 matches, the winner took the 4th set. This can be compared to the winner taking the 1st set in just 9 of the matches, the 2nd set in 12, and the 3rd set in 11.
-Of sets 1 thru 4, the match winner must take 2 sets. These were distributed as follows:
Winner goes up 2-0 (takes sets 1 and 2): 4 matches
Winner goes up 2-1 (takes sets 1 and 3): 1 match
Winner goes down 2-1 (takes sets 1 and 4): 4 matches
Winner goes up 2-1 (takes sets 2 and 3): 3 matches
Winner goes down 2-1 (takes set 2 and 4): 5 matches
Winner goes down 2-0 (takes set 3 and 4): 7 matches
Although this is a limited sample size, the player who wins sets 3 and/or 4 has a better chance to win a 5 set match.
