The greatest tournament of tennis is about to begin. Before I get to my thoughts on the men's side, here is a recap of 2009 and those with a few points to defend:
Champion - Roger Federer (SUI)
Runner Up - Andy Roddick (USA)
Semifinalists - Andy Murray (GBR), Tommy Haas (GER)
Quarterfinalists - Novak Djokovic (SRB), Ivo Karlovic (CRO), Lleyton Hewitt (AUS), Juan Carlos Ferrero (ESP)
Now without further ado, my thoughts:
Possible Champions: Roger Federer (SUI), Rafael Nadal (ESP), and I also think Andy Roddick (USA)
Players poised to go deeper than their seed i.e. dark horses: Tomas Berdych (CZE), Lleyton Hewitt (AUS), John Isner (USA)
Former champions in the draw: Only 3, Hewitt (2002), Federer (2003-7,9), Nadal (2008)
Other slam winners in the draw: Ferrero, Roddick, Djokovic
Former boys champions in the draw: Federer (1998), Melzer (1999), Mahut? (2000), Monfils (2004), Chardy (2005), de Bakker (2006), also Young (2007) was eliminated in qualifying. Interesting lack of performance at the senior level there with the exception of Federer obviously.
Players who will really suffer in the rankings with early departures: Haas, Karlovic, to a lesser degree Hewitt and Ferrero, and dare I say, Murray.

Hey there, just discovered your blog today. I'm also a huge tennis fan and couldn't agree more than Wimbledon is the crown jewel.
ReplyDeleteSince you like crunching numbers, is there any chance you could go a little deeper into them? Like how many times Fed saves a break point with an ace or with what frequency drop shots result in winning points by surface or average height over the net of ground strokes by the top three... I don't know if any of this info is available but it seems like it might be interesting.
Anyway, keep up the good work
