I know the US Open just ended but the battle the Davis Cup will happen again this weekend.
Semis:
ARG @ FRA (hard): With del Potro not playing, it is hard to see Argentina winning this especially with the emergence of Llodra on the French side. Monaco probably doesn't win a rubber meaning Nalbandian must win both rubbers plus they must win doubles. I say FRA 4 ARG 1
CZE @ SRB (hard): This could be a good one especially if Djokovic is hungover and given the "rest" Berdych and Stepanek have enjoyed after their first round losses. However, Djokovic is in form and Serbia has superior doubles, Stepanek is having trouble recovering from injury. SRB 3 CZE 2
So France vs Serbia for the Davis Cup.
World Group Playoffs:
USA @ COL (clay): Seeing this is on clay and at altitude and no Bryan bros, this is no gimme for the US. Still I think Querrey, Isner, and Fish should be able to handle Falla and Giraldo. USA 4 COL 1
AUT @ ISR (hard): With Melzer playing well, this could turn into a rout, ending Israel's fine world group run. I'll give Sela one win. AUT 4 ISR 1
RSA @ GER (clay): The Germans are just too good here for S Africa. Anderson could take one rubber maybe two but this is a team competition. GER 4 RSA 1
ITA @ SWE (hard): Team vs individual here. Can Soderling overcome a decent Italian team? Probably but he'll help in the doubles and the Swedes have some decent doubles specialists in Aspelin and Lindstedt. SWE 3 ITA 2
BRA @ IND (hard): India gets a good draw to try and stay in the world group with a home tie against a country from another hemisphere. However, I think Bellucci can carry Brazil here. This could come down to the 5th rubber. BRA 3 IND 2
BEL @ AUS (hard): Perhaps the easiest pick of the lot. Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi AUS 5 BEL 0 (Belgium does not have Malisse.)
SUI @ KAZ (hard): Another intriguing tie given no Federer. Both countries singles players are ranked in the same neighborhood. However, Wawrinka is in form and should be able to carry the Swiss but not without a fight. SUI 3 KAZ 2
ECU @ ROU (clay): The Lapentti's couldn't have asked for a better draw to try and keep Ecuador in the world group, but this still won't be easy. I don't know much about the Romanians except for Hanescu but they're at home so I'll give it to them. ROU 3 ECU 2
There are also some zonal competitions in action.
Relegation battle in Europe Zonal Group I: SVK @ BLR, POL @ LAT (includes Gulbis)
Relegation battle in Americas Zonal Group I: DOM @ CAN
Relegation battle in Asia/Pacific Zonal Group I: PHI @ KOR
Promotion battle in Europe Zonal Group II: SLO @ LTU, BIH @ POR
Promotion battle in Americas Zonal Group II: VEN @ MEX
Promotion battle in Asia/Pacific Zonal Group II: NZL @ THA
This will conclude the Davis cup for this year except for the final.
