US Open: Women's 1st Round

After getting off to a red hot start on Monday, going 16-0, the women’s seeds cooled off a bit with a 12-4 Tuesday. But only 4 seeds losing is pretty remarkable considering the up and down on the tour this year. Here are the unfortunate four:

8) Li lost to K.Bondarenko, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a battle of 2009 quarterfinalists. This one really surprised me given the consistency of Li this year and the fact that the younger Bondarenko has missed a good portion of the year with an injury.
17) Petrova lost to Petkovic, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. While a loss to Petkovic isn’t necessarily a bad loss, this puts Petrova in a bit of slump after a solid first half of the year, making the quarters of the AO and every clay tournament she entered.
26) Safarova lost to qualifier Paszek, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. The Czech no. 1 has done nothing since catching fire during the clay season, then flaming out at Roland Garros.
30) Shvedova lost to qualifier Dominguez Lino, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. This is a bad loss, and Shvedova hasn’t done much since making the quarters at Roland Garros.

Overall, the top 50 went 34-14 with Serena and Justine out. Li’s loss will drop her outside the top 10 and make her a long shot for the year end championships, which is sad considering her good year to date. Petrova’s loss probably doesn’t kill her ranking but we’ll see. Clijsters, with her championship to defend, is currently at #13 in the virtual rankings.

Top 50 players successfully defending 2nd round appearances from 2009: Jelena Jankovic (SRB), Samantha Stosur (AUS), Agnieszka Radwanska (POL), Elena Dementieva (RUS), Marion Bartoli (FRA), and Alona Bondarenko (UKR). Each successive win will now add to their points.
Top 50 players failing to defend 2nd round points: Barbora Zahlavova Strycvoa (CZE) (l. to 23-Kirilenko), Timea Bacsinszky (SUI) (l. to 21-Zheng), Angelique Kerber (GER) (l. to Dulko), and Anabel Medina Garrigues (ESP) (l. to Mattek-Sands).
