Earlier today two former top 10 players earned their first titles in quite some time during the US Open series.
In Washington, DC, Radek Stepanek, who missed a good portion of last year with injuries topped Gael Monfils 6-4 6-4 to win his 5th career title, but first since San Jose in '09. Stepanek will vault back into the top 40 and with some decent results in Canada and Cincinatti, may even find himself with a seed again come the US Open. It was a tough situation though for Monfils, who finished his semifinal match with Isner at 1:15 am and had return to court less than 14 hours later for the final.
In the same vein, Agnieszka Radwanska, won her first title since Istanbul in the summer of '08, defeating Vera Zvonareva 6-3 6-4 in Carlsbad, CA. Radwanska has put up good results since then and made finals in San Diego in '10 and Beijing in '09 but couldn't win either. Is she ready to take another step forward in her career and become a top 10 mainstay?
Finally, Dutchman Robin Haase won his first career title in Kitzbuhel, Austria on clay. He knocked off Albert Montanes 6-4 4-6 6-1 in the final. He will break the top 50 after this victory. Previous to yesterday, his career highlight may have been taking Nadal to 5 sets at Wimbledon in '10.
