Australian Open: Finals

The last two days gave us four tremendous semifinals between quality players, with only one match not going the distance.  It is the best semifinal round we've had in a very long time, if not ever, so I'll leave you the scores here for posterity's sake.  If anyone can think of a comparable set of 4 semifinals at a major, please leave it as a comment, I'd love to hear from you.

Nadal def. Federer 6-7 6-2 7-6 6-4
Djokovic def. Murray 6-3 3-6 6-7 6-1 7-5
Azarenka def. Clijsters 6-4 1-6 6-3
Sharapova def. Kvitova 6-2 3-6 6-4

Men's Final

1) Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs. 2) Rafael Nadal (ESP)

Djokovic:  7th major final (3rd at the AO), 4-2 record (2-0), 3rd consecutive F
Nadal:  15th major final (2nd at the AO), 10-4 record (1-0), 4th consecutive F

-It is Djokovic and Nadal's 3rd (consecutive) meeting in a major final, with Djokovic winning at Wimbledon and the US Open last year.

Nadal still leads the head to head 16-13, but Djokovic has won the last 6 meetings.  Djokovic also leads 9-5 on hard courts.  View their complete head to head here.

Women's Final

3) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) vs. 4) Maria Sharapova (RUS)

Azarenka:  1st major final
Sharapova:  6th major final (3rd at the AO), 3-2 record (1-1), last '11 Wimbledon

-Most notably, this is a rematch of the Miami final from last year, won by Azarenka.  Sharapova is still seeking her first major since shoulder surgery in late '08.

The head to head is even at 3-3, and they split 2 meetings last year.  On hard courts they are also even 2-2.  The complete head to head is here.
