Australian Open: Quarterfinals

The quarterfinals are now set down under, and while we did get a few unexpected results yesterday, the major players in the brackets have remained largely intact with the exception of 5-time champion Serena Williams' early exit last night (or later today) to unseeded Makarova, a Russian ranked outside the top 50.  I'll leave it to others to find the last time Williams exited to played ranked that low at a major.  But, the top four seeds are still atop their section on both the men's and women's tournaments, so this should be a spectacular second week.  And we've already seen Wozniacki/Jankovic and Li/Clijsters.  However, we won't see Murray/Tsonga or Sharapova/Williams.  Anyway, here are the last eight:

Men
1) Novak Djokovic (SRB) - 19th major quarterfinal (5th at the AO), 13-5 record (2-2), 11th consecutive QF
2) Rafael Nadal (ESP) - 22nd major quarterfinal (6th at the AO), 17-4 record (2-3), 10th consecutive QF
3) Roger Federer (SUI) - 35th major quarterfinal (9th at the AO), 29-5 record (8-0), 31st consecutive QF
4) Andy Murray (GBR) - 11th major quarterfinal (3rd at the AO), 8-2 record (2-0), 5th consecutive QF
5) David Ferrer (ESP) - 6th major quarterfinal (3rd at the AO), 2-3 record (1-1), last '11 Aussie Open
7) Tomas Berdych (CZE) - 5th major quarterfinal (2nd at the AO), 2-2 record (0-1), last '11 Aussie Open
11) Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG) - 5th major quarterfinal (2nd at the AO), 2-2 record (0-1), last '09 US Open
24) Kei Nishikori (JPN) - 1st major quarterfinal, best result 4th round '08 US Open

Women
1) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) - 6th major quarterfinal (2nd at the AO), 3-2 record (1-0), 2nd consecutive QF
2) Petra Kvitova (CZE) - 4th major quarterfinal (2nd at the AO), 2-1 record (0-1), last '11 Wimbledon
3) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) - 6th major quarterfinal (2nd at the AO), 1-4 record (0-1), last '11 Wimbledon
4) Maria Sharapova (RUS) - 16th major quarterfinal (5th at the AO), 12-3 record (4-0), last '11 Wimbledon
8) Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) - 5th major quarterfinal (3rd at the AO), 0-4 record (0-2), last '11 Aussie Open
11) Kim Clijsters (BEL) - 19th major quarterfinal (7th at the AO), 15-3 record (6-0), last '11 Aussie Open
Sara Errani (ITA) - 1st major quarterfinal, best result 3rd round 5 times
Ekaterina Makarova (RUS) - 1st major quarterfinal, best result 4th round '11 Aussie/French Opens

A couple notes:
-Some of these quarterfinal record are incredible:  Nadal 17-4, Federer 29-5, Murray 8-2, Sharapova 12-3, Clijsters 15-3.  Those numbers are why they are the best in the game.
-Sharapova has never lost a major quarterfinal not at the French Open.  Clijsters and Federer are also unbeaten in AO quarterfinals.

Murray vs Nishikori
Federer vs Del Potro
Nadal vs Berdych
Wozniacki vs Clijsters
Azarenka vs Radwanska
Sharapova vs Makarova
