While Federer defeating Nadal and coming through to win a Masters where everyone participated is a big story, I'll begin with Azarenka since she still hasn't lost and will now begin to draw legitimate comparisons to Djokovic's 2011 start.
Women's Final
1) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) def. 2) Maria Sharapova (RUS) 6-3 6-0
-This was the first meeting between the top two players in the world in a final since...2008 That stat is quite remarkable even with the revolving door no. 1 we had prior to Wozniacki.
-Azarenka has begun the season with 23 wins. This is now the second most on the WTA only Hingis' 37 wins in 1997.
-This is her 4th title of 2012, 12th of her career, and her 4th Tier I title.
-Kerber reached the semis with a win over Li and will reach #14 in tomorrow's rankings, meaning there are now 4 Germans in the top 17.
-Ivanovic successfully defended her semifinal points.
-Azarenka now leads Sharapova by about 1800 points in the rankings, but both reached the final in Miami last year.
Men's Final
3) Roger Federer (SUI) def. 11) John Isner (USA) 7-6(7) 6-3
-Federer wins his 73rd career title and 3rd of 2012. It is his 4th win at Indian Wells.
-He wins his 19th Masters title (2nd consecutive) which ties him with Nadal for most all-time.
-Federer defeated Nadal 6-3 6-4 in the semis, cutting Nadal's edge in the series to 18-10. This was just their 4th meeting on North American hard courts where they are now 2-2.
-Isner reached his first Masters final, and has now reached 2 consecutive Masters semis. He defeated Djokovic 7-6 3-6 7-6(5) in the semis.
-Djokovic loses for the second time in 2012 and neither loss has come to Federer or Nadal. The world no. 1 defeating Nadal at the Aussie Open but has yet to play Federer. He lost to Murray in Dubai.
-Djokovic loses ground to both Nadal and Federer in the rankings, but the big story is that Federer is now within 900 points of Nadal, and unless Federer falls off the map, it is inevitable that Federer will Nadal sometime during the clay season. Isner moves into the top 10 for the first time in his career and will likely overtake Fish after Miami to be the #1 American.
