Never Count Out a Legend

Roger Federer and Serena Williams turned back the clock last weekend and sent a(nother) statement that they're not going anywhere soon as won the titles in Madrid.  Federer will regain the no. 2 ranking after losing it to Djokovic last March, and Serena now has a 13-match winning streak on clay.  Serena went through the world's top two players at this event, surrending a combined 8 games to them, and she will reach no. 6 in the world.

ATP:  3) Roger Federer (SUI) def. 6) Tomas Berdych (CZE) 3-6 7-5 7-5

-Federer wins 74th career title, 4th of 2012, last '12 Indian Wells.  It is his second win in Madrid since it moved to clay in '09 and has reached the semis there every year.
-It is Federer's 20th career Masters title, again tieing him with Nadal for most all-time.
-Berdych reached his 3rd career Masters final, and he now has a 1-2 record with a win at '05 Paris.
-Players outside the big 4 continue to breakthrough to Masters finals (players ranked 5 or lower have reached 6 of the last 8) but are unable to win those finals against the top 4 players.
-Tipsarevic continues to play well and back-up his career high world no. 9 finish last year with impressive play this year.  He reached his first career Masters semi with a win over Djokovic on Saturday.

WTA:  9) Serena Williams (USA) def. 1) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) 6-1 6-3

-Serena wins 41st career title, 2nd of 2012, last '12 Charleston.
-By my count, that is her 11th career "Tier I" title, but only her 2nd on clay ('02 Rome) to go along with her 13 majors.
-Azarenka has reached the final in every event she has contested this year except Miami, but has lost her last 2 finals and is winless in her last 3 tournaments after her amazing start.
-The new world no. 55 in Lucie Hradecka who reached the semis in Madrid after upsetting Stosur in two tiebreaks in a match with no breaks.  She owns the 6th-fastest serve of the season, a 187 km/h rocket at the Australian Open.
-Radwanska reached the semis but lost their to Azarenka and has now lost to the world no. 1 six times year, but is undefeated against the rest of the tour.  She is now the world no. 3.

Now we reset the brackets and go at it again in Rome.
