History was made over the weekend (and into this morning) as Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal triumphed on Parisian clay.
Rafael Nadal def. Novak Djokovic 6-4 6-3 2-6 7-5 over 2 days.
Maria Sharapova def. Sara Errani 6-3 6-2
-Nadal wins his 50th career title, his 11th major.
-Nadal wins his 7th French Open, now the most of any man, passing Bjorn Borg.
-It is his 3rd consecutive French Open.
-He has now won 3 consecutive matches over Djokovic, all on clay.
-He stays at #2 in the world.
-Major titles: '05 French Open, '06 French Open, '07 French Open, '08 French Open, '08 Wimbledon, '09 Aussie Open, '10 French Open, '10 Wimbledon, '10 US Open, '11 French Open, '12 French Open
-Sharapova wins her 27th career title, her 4th major.
-She completes the career grand slam, the 10th woman to do so and 6th in the open era.
-Those ladies are Maureen Connolly, Doris Hart, Shirley Fry, Billie Jean King (all pre-open era), Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, and Serena Williams.
-She regains #1 in the world.
-Major titles: '04 Wimbledon, '06 US Open, '08 Aussie Open, '12 French Open
-The last six majors have been won by six different women and eight women have combined to win the last nine majors. Compare this with '04 French Open to '06 Aussie Open when eight women won eight majors (Myskina, Sharapova, Kuznetsova, Serena, Henin, Venus, Clijsters, Mauresmo).
Annika Beck won the girl's singles, she is ranked #3 in my last list among her peers born in 1994.
