After four days at Wimbledon, there have been upsets all over the grounds with several top 10 seeds making an early exodus. This is the post where I rundown which seeded players have embarrassed themselves and lost early, and exalt the fortunes of those unseeded players who are still alive. There will be little to no mention of the seeds who have only done what they were expected to do...reach the third round. Note that this post does not include two seeded players yet to finish their second round match...Raonic (21) and Querrey are tied 3-3 in the 3rd having split the first two sets and Cepelova serving for the match at 7-6 in the 3rd against Medina Garrigues (26).
Men's Seeds Out: 2) Nadal (R2 l. to Rosol), 6) Berdych (R1 l. to Gulbis), 11) Isner (R1 l. to Falla), 13) Simon (R2 l. to Malisse), 14) Lopez (R1 l. to Nieminen), 20) Tomic (R1 l. to Goffin), 22) Dolgopolov (R2 l. to Paire), 23) Seppi (R1 l. to Istomin), 24) Granollers (R1 l. to Troicki), 25) Wawrinka (R1 l. to Melzer), 32) Anderson (R1 l. to Dimitrov)
Men's seeds went 24-8 in round 1, and so far 20-3 in round 2.
Women's Seeds Out: 5) Stosur (R2 l. to Rus), 7) Wozniacki (R1 l. to Paszek), 9) Bartoli (R2 l. to Lucic), 11) Li (R2 l. to Cirstea), 13) Cibulkova (R1 l. to Zakopalova), 16) Pennetta (R1 l. to Giorgi), 18) Jankovic (R1 l. to Clijsters), 19) Safarova (R1 l. to Bertens), 23) Cetkovska (R2 l. to Stephens), 27) Hantuchova (R1 l. to Hampton), 29) Niculescu (R1 l. to Foretz Gacon), 31) Pavlyuchenkova (R2 l. to Lepchenko), 32) Kuznetsova (R1 l. to Wickmayer)
Women's seeds went 24-8 in round 1, and so far 18-5 in round 2.
Eleven men's seeds are out, eight in the first round. Thirteen women's seeds are out (wow), eight in the first round plus Zvonareva. In the Aussie Open this year, 11 men's seeds were gone including 6 by the first round, and 12 women's seeds were gone but only 4 in the first round. At this year's French Open, 10 men's seeds lost by this time including 5 in the first round, and 12 women's seeds had lost but 5 of those were in the first round. As last year's Wimbledon, again 12 men's seeds lost early including 5 in the first round, and 10 women's seeds lost early including 6 in the first round. So the early exits are similar but slightly higher than usual, especially the 8 first round losers.
Falla defeated Isner and Mahut in back-to-back matches, both ending 7-5 in the 5th.
Unseeded men in third round: Viktor Troicki (SRB), Xavier Malisse (BEL), Alejandro Falla (COL), Denis Istomin (UZB), Marcos Baghdatis (CYP), Lukas Lacko (SVK), David Goffin (BEL), Benoit Paire (FRA), Lukas Rosol (CZE), Q) Brian Baker (USA), Q) Jerzy Janowicz (POL). Several of these players have been seeds or extended periods of good form in the recent past. Men's qualifiers went an amazing 10-6 in round 1 with 3 of the losses coming against fellow qualifiers, and two survive to R3.
Unseeded women in third round: Su-Wei Hsieh (TPE), Sloane Stephens (USA), Kim Clijsters (BEL), Heather Watson (GBR), Sorana Cirstea (ROU), Arantxa Rus (NED), Yaroslava Shvedova (KAZ), Klara Zakopalova (CZE), Varvara Lepchenko (USA), Tamira Paszek (AUT), Yanina Wickmayer (BEL), Q) Camila Giorgi (ITA), Q) Mirjana Lucic (CRO). This list may be more notable than the men's list, what with 4-time slam champion Clijsters and several others who have reached slam QF in the past being here including Paszek, who reached the Wimbledon quarters last year. And since you're dying to know, women's qualifiers went 5-7 in round 1 (not to shabby), with three still alive since Cepelova is in the midst (and likely to win) her second rounder.
Eliminated '11 Quarterfinalists: Nadal-F, Lopez, Tomic, Bartoli, Cibulkova, Pironkova (R2 l. to Sharapova)
If this is how the first four days have gone, what of the remaining ten?
