Tokyo has been kind to the top seeds so far in the bracket with 6 of them still around, and no unseeded players still remain. This means we should have some nice matches still to come in the tournament. Here are the last eight:
1) Victoria Azarenka (BLR)
2) Maria Sharapova (RUS)
3) Agnieszka Radwanska (POL)
5) Angelique Kerber (GER)
6) Sara Errani (ITA)
8) Samantha Stosur (AUS)
10) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)
17) Nadia Petrova (RUS)
The two top 8 seeds that didn't make it here were Kvitova, who crashed and burned against Martic in her first match (second round) and Li who lost a tight match to Wozniacki. In fact, Kvitova was the only seed to lose her opening round match, though Kirilenko withdrew with a back injury (giving Petrova the 17th seed). This makes seeds an unbelievable 23-3 against unseeded players with Ivanovic (R2 l. to U.Radwanska) and Kanepi (R2 l. to Hampton) joining Kvitova as the losers.
Qualifiers went 4-4 in the first round with wins by Parmentier, Larsson, Hampton, and Watson. Only Hampton reached the third round.
With Serena absent, Americans went 2-2 in the main draw with Hampton getting both wins and King stumbling against Zheng. McHale was not in the draw so she must still be struggling with illness.
Japanese players went just 1-3 with Morita getting the sole win (def. Cirstea) and Date-Krumm and Nara (qualifier) losing.
Best scoreline so far was Petrova def. Martic in the third round 7-6(2) 6-7(1) 6-4 with a close second Schiavone def. Shvedova in the first round 4-6 7-6(4) 6-4.
