The Fed Cup was essentially won (in my eyes) by the Czech Republic when Safarova upset Ivanovic on Saturday in the first rubber. Going up against Kvitova and potentially a formidable doubles team, the Serbs simply couldn't allow Safarova to win a match. But she did and when Jankovic lost fairly easily to Kvitova, the Czech were up 2-0 after one day.
Then I thought that if, just if, Ivanovic might upset Kvitova, I could the Serbs rallying. But I put about a 10% chance of Ivanovic beating the Czech no. 1. However, that did happen, Ivanovic made up for her day 1 loss by stunning Kvitova, but then Fed Cup stalwart Jankovic goes out and wins only 2 games against Safarova and just like that, the Czechs retain the Fed Cup. My mind is boggled by someone who has played her heart out for Fed Cup over the years and had such a tremendous record to go out so meekly to 2 matches, winning a total of 7 games.
With that, women's tennis is complete for 2012.
