Australian Open: Quarterfinals

The quarterfinals are set at the 2013 edition of the Australian Open in Melbourne, and certainly not without some surprises.  It is the first major since '11 Wimbledon that both singles draws still have an unseeded player alive.  After a calm initial two rounds of the tournament, Jeremy Chardy shocked the world by dismissing Del Potro, then Ekaterina Makarova sent Kerber packing and they were the first (and perhaps only) of the top tier players to be eliminated.

We have also seen several long 5 set matches on the men's side including Djokovic surviving Wawrinka 12-10 in the 5th plus there were 5 5-set matches in round 3 (Chardy def. Del Potro, Seppi def. Cilic, Simon def. Monfils, Anderson def. Verdasco, Tipsarevic def. Benneteau)

Here are the final eight in each draw:

-Collectively, the men have now reached 108 major quarterfinals compared to 93 for the women.

-One more win for Djokovic and he will clinch the no. 1 ranking.  Chardy is up to #25 after his run to the quarters.
-One more win for Serena and she will pass Azarenka, she must reach the final to be sure to pass Sharapova.  One more win for Li and will take over #5 from Kerber.  Stephens is up to #18 and Kuznetsova to #50.
