Here is my midweek update from Monte Carlo, where unseeded players have taken over the draw with three of them reaching the quarterfinals. Only Djokovic, Nadal, and some Frenchmen have been immune to the upset bug, which leaves the following eight still standing at the first clay Masters of 2013.
1) Novak Djokovic (SRB)
3) Rafael Nadal (ESP)
6) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA)
7) Richard Gasquet (FRA)
13) Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI)
Fabio Fognini (ITA)
Grigor Dimitrov (BUL)
Jarkko Nieminen (FIN)
-This is the first Masters quarterfinal for Fognini and Dimitrov while Nieminen reaches his first since '06 Paris.
-To get there, Fognini took out Seppi and Berdych, Dimitrov beat Tipsarevic, and Nieminen defeated Raonic and Del Potro
-The other surprising result was Wawrinka losing only 3 games to Murray
-Of the eight quarterfinalists in 2013, four remain in the draw: Nadal (W), Djokovic (F), Tsonga and Wawrinka (QF)
-Of the other four, Berdych and Murray were knocked out in the round of 16 while Simon and Haase suffered first match losses.
-John Isner was the only American in the main draw, taking a wildcard. He won the first set off Ernests Gulbis before losing in 3.
-Djokovic lost first sets to Youzhny and Monaco but prevailed in 3.
-Nadal lost 3 games to Matosevic and 6 to Kohlschreiber.
-Qualifiers went 4-3 in round 1 with wins for Ramos, Montanes, Andujar, and Roger-Vasselin
-Third set tiebreaks: Nieminen def. Raonic (R2), Kohlschreiber def. Andujar (R2), Nieminen def. Del Potro (R3)
Tomorrow's matchups:
-Djokovic vs Nieminen
-Gasquet vs Fognini
-Nadal vs Dimitrov
-Tsonga vs Wawrinka
I still like Nadal to win this tournament rather easily. Djokovic has showed shaky form this spring and I am little concerned for him going forward. This is an opportunity for Gasquet to reach a Masters final and I also like Wawrinka's chances of getting a (futile) shot at Nadal.
