After a fairly straightforward first few days in Paris, the French Open has heated up with a number of great matches and we've had a number of good 5-setters on the men's side. The top players in both draws have been taking care of business and there are few good comeback stories as well. The American women continued to make noise, until the three not named Serena were squelched today, all in straight sets. Veterans are the name of the game on the men's side, with half of the remaining players being over 30 years old, including Robredo who has come from 2 sets down in 3 consecutive matches! Wawrinka also came from 2 sets down to oust Gasquet today 8-6 in the 5th. On the women's side, Errani is backing up her fine play from here, surviving Suarez Navarro in 3 to reach the quarters and Kuznetsova became the first woman to reach the quarters of 2 consecutive majors as an unseeded player since the majors began seeding 32 players in 2001. And finally, I can't go on without mentioning the 12 match points saved by Isner or the grit of Tommy Haas in his 7-5, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-7(10), 10-8 in a truly incredible match.
Here are the remaining men and women:
Men
1) Novak Djokovic (SRB) - 24th major quarterfinal (7th at the FO), 18-5 record (4-2), 16th consecutive QF
2) Roger Federer (SUI) - 40th major quarterfinal (10th at the FO), 33-6 record (7-2), 36th consecutive QF
3) Rafael Nadal (ESP) - 24th major quarterfinal (8th at the FO), 19-4 record (7-0), last '12 French Open
4) David Ferrer (ESP) - 11th major quarterfinal (4th at the FO), 5-5 record (1-2), 6th consecutive QF
6) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) - 10th major quarterfinal (2nd at the FO), 4-5 record (0-1), 2nd consecutive QF
9) Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) - 3rd major quarterfinal (1st at the FO), 0-2 record, last '11 Aussie Open
12) Tommy Haas (GER) - 8th major quarterfinal (1st at the FO), 4-3 record, last '09 Wimbledon
32) Tommy Robredo (ESP) - 6th major quarterfinal (5th at the FO), 0-5 record (0-4), last '09 French Open
-Haas has now reached the quarters at all 4 majors
-Djokovic is now second only to Federer in consecutive semis reached and is 3rd behind Federer and Connors in consecutive quarters. He is quietly (because of Federer's shadow) becoming one of the most consistent major achievers of all time.
Women
1) Serena Williams (USA) - 36th major quarterfinal (8th at the FO), 23-12 record (2-5), 4th consecutive QF
2) Maria Sharapova (RUS) - 20th major quarterfinal (7th at the FO), 16-3 record (3-3), 3rd consecutive QF
3) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) - 10th major quarterfinal (3rd at the FO), 5-4 record (0-2), 4th consecutive QF
4) Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) - 8th major quarterfinal (1st at the FO), 1-6 record, 2nd consecutive QF
5) Sara Errani (ITA) - 4th major quarterfinal (2nd at the FO), 2-1 record (1-0), last '12 US Open
12) Maria Kirilenko (RUS) - 3rd major quarterfinal (1st at the FO), 0-2 record, last '12 Wimbledon
18) Jelena Jankovic (SRB) - 8th major quarterfinal (4th at the FO), 6-1 record (3-0), last '10 French Open
Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) - 14th major quarterfinal (6th at the FO), 5-8 record (2-3), 2nd consecutive QF
-Check out Jankovic's major quarterfinal record
-The men have combined to reach 126 major quarterfinals while the women have managed 103, which is about the closest it's been in recent times.
-Almagro is the only '12 quarterfinalist who has lost so far (Murray and Del Potro withdrew), and that after holding a 2-0 sets lead over Robredo
-'12 finalists Sharapova and Errani are the ONLY remaining '12 quarterfinalists. Stosur and Kerber were one win from getting there (losses to Jankovic and Kuznetsova) while Kvitova lost to Hampton in R3. The others I mentioned as losing in the first two rounds (Cibulkova, Shvedova, Kanepi)
-There is little drama on the rankings front. Azarenka will move past Sharapova to no. 2 if she reaches the final. Kirilenko is into the top 10 and Kuznetsova will be seeded at Wimbledon.

Nadal vs Wawrinka
Ferrer vs Robredo
