The dominance of Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams was extended through another tournament, and of course this time it was at a major. Both have long winning streaks heading onto another surface on which they have excelled - grass.
Rafael Nadal def. David Ferrer 6-3 6-2 6-3
-Nadal wins 57th career title, 7th of 2013, last '13 Rome
-It is unprecedented 8th French Open title (Borg has 6)
-He has won 4 consecutive French Opens twice
-It is his 12th major ('05 French Open, '06 French Open, '07 French Open, '08 French Open, '08 Wimbledon, '09 Aussie Open, '10 French Open, '10 Wimbledon, '10 US Open, '11 French Open, '12 French Open) This ties him for 3rd all time with Emerson, trailing Federer's 17 and Sampras' 14.
-He has a 22-match winning streak
Djokovic was set to make this another season of dominance with the slight decline of Federer, but Nadal has returned from injury to be almost unbeatable with a mere 2 losses and leads the race for London despite not even playing the Aussie Open. Grant it, Nadal's success has come on clay, but we will see over the next few months if this translates to success on grass and hard courts. It is now one major apiece with another to begin in a mere 2 weeks. Djokovic and the others will get another shot at Nadal, who will only rise in the rankings for the next 7 months.
Serena Williams def. Maria Sharapova 6-4 6-4
-Serena wins 52nd career title, 6th of 2013, last '13 Rome
-It is her 2nd French Open title after an 11-year drought, and she has now won each major twice
-It is her 16th major ('99 US Open, '02 French Open, '02 Wimbledon, '02 US Open, '03 Aussie Open, '03 Wimbledon, '05 Aussie Open, '07 Aussie Open, '08 US Open, '09 Aussie Open, '09 Wimbledon, '10 Aussie Open, '10 Wimbledon, '12 Wimbledon, '12 US Open) She is 6th all time but 4th in the open era trailing Graf's 22 and Evert and Navratilova's 18
-She has 31-match winning streak and has only lost 3 times in a calendar year (Kerber, Stephens, Azarenka)
Serena's play off late only leaves us wondering what might have been if injuries and off-court interests kept her from winning many more titles. She goes out and dominates her worst major, dropping just one set (Kuznetsova in the QF) while losing just one game in the semis (Errani). It was a fairly tight victory over Sharapova but this is clay after all. Now she moves to grass and will be the very heavy favorite to bag major #17. What isn't possible for the world no. 1, even at the age of 31?
