I am crazy busy recently in my home and work world which is unfortunate considering the event now going on in the tennis world, so I may not be able to get to all my typical posts. But here's a few lines about the US Open.
-The American men are having an OK tournament with 3 reaching the third round: Isner, Sock, and Smyczek. The latter is having a nice year completely under the radar and this result will get him inside the top 100. Sock will play Tipsarevic in round 3 which is winnable. Isner has a tough match against Kohlschreiber after beating Monfils. Querrey crashed out in the second round, but not everything seems right with his game at the moment. Kudla, wild card Klahn, qualifier Young, and veteran Ram picked up first round wins too.
-The American women have not had a good tournament so far, save the seeded ladies Serena, Stephens, and Hampton (the latter two played a third round match today, won by Stephens). But McHale and Riske have had great tournaments and are still alive, so good for them, especially McHale who has been slumping for the majority of the year. However, the other women pretty much went out early. Out of the bevy of others, only Venus, Vandeweghe (Q), Mattek-Sands, Duval (Q), and Vickery (under 18 wild card) advanced one round.
-A few surprises including Hewitt taking out Del Potro, who I thought had a fair chance to win this tournament, Pennetta besting 4th-seed and last year's semi finalist Errani in round 2, 2011 champ Stosur losing to an American wild card (Duval)
-Thirteen men's seeds are out, which is a high number, and ten women's seeds had been eliminated in the first two rounds, which is fairly average and maybe toward the low side.
-Dan Evans (GBR), Kurumi Nara (JPN), Camila Giorgi (ITA), and Julia Glushko (ISR) are the remaining qualifiers.
That's it for today, I'm going to try and squeeze in my quarterfinal post early next week but we'll see for sure.
