Doha Quarterfinals

The first big tour event of the year is halfway done, the WTA Premier 5 tournament in Doha, Qatar.  While Serena, Azarenka, and Sharapova are contending this event, the other top 10 players have cruised, with the notable exception of the reigning Aussie Open champion and soon to be world no. 2.  She was upset by a player ranked outside the top 100 today.  Here are the eight remaining players:

2) Agnieszka Radwanska (POL)
3) Petra Kvitova (CZE)
4) Sara Errani (ITA)
5) Jelena Jankovic (SRB)
6) Angelique Kerber (GER)
7) Simona Halep (ROU)
Yanina Wickmayer (BEL)
Q) Petra Cetkovska (CZE)

-Though it's only been two matches for the top 8, only Radwanska, Jankovic, and Kerber have yet to lose a set.  Jankovic has dropped only 5 games.
-The top 8 seeds have excelled, going 13-2 in their matches.  But the second tier of seeds (9-16) was miserable, going only 2-7 with Ivanovic and Stosur winning one match and Suarez Navarro pulling out.
-No Americans reached the round of 16.  They went 2-4 with Venus and Mattek-Sands winning one but 14-Stephens and Lepchenko losing their opening rounders.  Venus lost to Kvitova 9-7 in the 3rd set tiebreak and Mattek-Sands upset Bouchard.
-Qualifiers have gone 7-8 with Cetkovska (wins over Stephens and Li) still alive.  Lucic-Baroni reached the 3rd round and Pironkova and Hsieh each won one match.
-2013 quarterfinalists:  Azarenka (W)-w/d; Serena (F)-w/d; Sharapova (SF)-w/d); Radwanska (SF); Kvitova (QF); Errani (QF); Wozniacki (QF)-R2 l. to Wickmayer; Stosur (QF)-R2 l. to Cepelova, so only 3 of the 8 still alive.
-The top 10 sees no ranking changes yet except Li passing Azarenka.  Wickmayer is up no. 58 and Cetkovska is back into the top 100 at no. 91.
-Tomorrows quarterfinals:
Kerber vs Cetkovska
Kvitova vs Jankovic
Errani vs Halep
Radwanska vs Wickmayer

The door is open for someone to snag a Tier I title.  Who will come through?  It's hard to see Radwanska failing to come through the bottom half, but the top half is much more open.  I'll take Radwanska over Jankovic in the final.
