Petkovic Wins First Title Since Injury, Ivanovic Wins 2nd Title of 2014

While the men were scattered all over the corners of the globe performing Davis Cup heroics, the women were playing their first clay tournament of the year in South Carolina and another hard court event Mexico.  And while the men had several upsets in Davis Cup, several teenaged and other young women were making their marks on the tour.  But in the end, veterans prevailed.  Andrea Petkovic won her first title since all her injury problems on the green clay of Charleston, defeating youngster and first time WTA finalist Cepelova in the final.  Ana Ivanovic won her second title of the season, winning in Monterrey, over another first time WTA finalist in her compatriot Jaksic.  She also beat a resurgent Wozniacki in the semis.

-Petkovic wins 3rd career title, last '11 Strasbourg (nearly 3-yr drought)
-All her titles have come on clay
-Americans: Not good, 6-12, only Venus advanced past the 2nd round, losing there to Bouchard (no shame in that).  15-Keys, King, Davis, and q-Min were first round winners though Keys l. to Peng in a 3rd set tiebreak.  1-Serena, 5-Stephens, Lepchenko, Riske, McHale, Oudin, and Rogers all lost opening round matches.
-Cepelova reached her first WTA QF in Shenzhen earlier this year.  Here she beat Serena, Hantuchova, and Vesnina en route to her first WTA semi and final.  She is now ranked no. 51.
-Bencic, 17-yr-old qualifier, reached her first WTA quarterfinal and semifinal before falling in a 3rd set tiebreak to Cepelova.  She makes her top 100 debut and be by far the youngest player in the top 100 at no. 91.  She also beat Errani in the quarters.
-Kirilenko, in her return from injury, was Bencic's first main draw victim.
-Petkovic double bageled Dominguez Lino in the second round.
-Serena's title defense ended in her first match to Cepelova

2) Ana Ivanovic (SRB) def. Jovana Jaksic (SRB) 6-2 6-1
-Ivanovic wins 13th career title, 2nd of 2014, last '14 Auckland
-Americans: 4-4, almost as good as Charleston with not nearly the star power.  Only Vandeweghe failed to win a match (l. to Wozniacki).  Gibbs def. Hlavackova but l. to Puig, Kiick def. Majeric but lost to her compatriot Boserup, who qualified and beat Flipkens, Kiick, and then fell to Jaksic.
-For Boserup, it was her first WTA main draw win and quarterfinal
-For Kiick, an 18-yr-old, it was her first WTA main draw win
-Jaksic reached her first WTA quarterfinal, semi, and final, though Knapp was her biggest win.  The 20-yr-old rises to no. 106
-Date-Krumm reached the semis with wins over Pennetta, Puig, and Babos
-Pavlyuchenkova was the defending champion but did not play this week
