Miami: Women's Early Rounds

I'm going to go ahead and group all the early rounds together and separate the men's and women's draws, partly because the second rounds were completed over the weekend and I didn't get a chance/didn't want to sit down at my computer and do this post.

Somewhat surprisingly, not too much damage done to the women's draw through the first three rounds, with only 3 unseeded ladies making the round of 16, and one of those being Justine Henin.  Also notable is the top 7 seeds made it through with the exception of Dementieva who somehow managed to draw Henin in the second round...again!  All three Belgians are still alive as well as 7 of the 8 quarterfinalists from 2009.  Ivanovic managed to win a match and managed to stay close with Radwanska in 2 tights sets.

Here are your early upsets:

One important result from 1st round action was Iveta Benesova fell to Elena Baltacha in the first round, thereby failing to defend quarterfinal points.

2nd Round
5) Dementieva to Henin, 3 and 2; Elena has got to wondering what's up with these draws;
8) Li to Bacsinszky, 7-3 in 3rd set tiebreak; That makes no 0 wins for Li in Indian Wells/Miami;
10) Pennetta to Petkovic, 6-0 in the 3rd; That makes 1 win for Pennetta in Indian Wells/Miami;
20) Zheng to Razzano, 4 and 2; The Chinese struggling to follow up breakthrough AO;
21) A.Bondarenko to Dulko, 7-5, 6-2; Dulko racking up some decent wins;
23) Lisicki retired down a set to Shvedova; Lisicki struggling with injuries after breakout 2009;
24) Kleybanova to Errani, 6-4, 7-5; And just when you thought Alisa was moving up;
29) Martinez Sanchez to Safarova;
30) Medina Garrigues to Vinci, 6-4, 7-6(5);
31) Wozniak to Hercog, 7-6(5), 6-3; The Slovene getting some good wins;

3rd Round
15) Schiavone to 22) Pavlyuchenkova, 7-5, 6-3; Russian teen back on the winning track;
16) Petrova to 19) Hantuchova, 2 and 4; Petrova's inconsistency continues;
26) Cibulkova to Henin, 4 and 4; Upset in seed only;
Also seeds to losing to higher seeds include 17) Peer, 25) Ivanovic, 27) Szavay, 28) Vesnina, and 32) Kirilenko.

I'll post a wrap on the men's early rounds tomorrow after the completion of their 3rd round tonight.
