Tournament Updates: Houston, Casablanca, Ponte Vedra Beach, and Marbella

The quarterfinals are set at the week's 4 tournaments.  I will give you those 32 players and give an update on those players with at least quarterfinals to defend.

Houston:

Quarterfinalists:
1) Fernando Gonzalez (CHI)
3) Sam Querrey (USA)
4) Lleyton Hewitt (AUS)
6) Horacio Zeballos (ARG)
Juan Ignacio Chela (ARG)
Xavier Malisse (BEL)
Nicolas Massu (CHI)
Wayne Odesnik (USA)

Hewitt was 2 points from defeat when he broke Devvarman to force a 3rd set tiebreak, which he one 7-2.  I think it is a little mysterious how Odesnik is playing this tournament, but I'm just a fan.  Isner loses a heartbreaker in 3 tiebreaks to Malisse, 7-3, 7-9, 7-3.

The seeds falling out were the aforementioned 2) Isner, 5) Korolev to American qualifier Ryan Sweeting in the first round (he then gave Massu a run for his money), 7) Schwank to Chela in the second round, and 8) Russell withdrew and was replaced by lucky loser Devvarman who came within 2 points of the quarters.

Korolev fails to defend his semifinal points here, and Isner likewise his quarterfinal points.  Also Phau (semis), Canas and Haas (quarters) are off this week and will not defend.  Garcia-Lopez will try and defend his quarterfinal points in Casablanca.

Casablanca:

Quarterfinalists:
1) Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI)
2) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP)
3) Victor Hanescu (ROU)
4) Lukasz Kubot (POL)
8) Florent Serra (FRA)
Potito Starace (ITA)
Richard Gasquet (FRA)
Reda El Amrani (MAR)

Wawrinka needs 3 sets to survive qualifier Klizan, likewise Hanescu to qualifier Nieminen.  And who is this young Moraccan, El Amrani (ranked 286 in the world and makes a quarter)?  And is Gasquet getting his game back?

The losing seeds were 5) Mathieu to Hernandez in the first round, 6) Greul to Hajek in the first round (who was then beaten El Amrani), and 7) O.Rochus to Gasquet in the first round.

Gabashvili fails to defend to his quarterfinal points here, falling El Amrani in a 3rd set tiebreak in the first round.  Gil was beaten in qualifying so he will not defend either.  Ferrero (champion), Andreev and Montanes (semis), and Gicquel (quarters) are not competing this week, so they will not defend.

On the brighter side, Garcia-Lopez (pts from Houston) and Hanescu have successfully defended quarterfinal points.

Ponte Vedra Beach

Quarterfinalists
1) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)
3) Dominika Cibulkova (SVK)
4) Elena Vesnina (RUS)
5) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS)
6) Aleksandra Wozniak (CAN)
8) Melanie Oudin (USA)
Olga Govortsova (BLR)
Varvara Lepchenko (USA)

Six seeds get through to the quarterfinals here, the most of any tournament this week, and only one seed actually lost, 2) A.Bondarenko, crashing out to Govortsova in the first round, 6-0 in the 3rd.  7) Razzano withdrew from the tournament and was replaced by lucky loser Lepchenko, who promptly made the quarters in her place, dropping just 2 games to Kerber in the second round.

As a result of the loss, Alona Bondarenko fails to defend her quarterfinal points.  All the others playing here are still alive, though Petrova (semis), Hantuchova and Paszek (quarters) are not playing this week.

Cibulkova has successfully defended her quarterfinal.

Marbella:

Quarterfinalists
1) Victoria Azarenka (BLR)
2) Flavia Pennetta (ITA)
5) Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (ESP)
8) Carla Suarez Navarro (ESP)
Sara Errani (ITA)
Tatjana Malek (GER)
Q) Simona Halep (ROU)
Q) Beatriz Garcia Vidagany (ESP)

In an absolute stunner, world no. 258 Garcia Vidagany takes down the winner of two US Open, world #10 Kim Clijsters, while breaking her 9 times, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.  The Spaniard had qualified for her first ever WTA tour level main draw.

Besides the aforementioned 3) Clijsters, 4) Rezai lost to Malek to second round, 6) Kirilenko fell to Cirstea (who then lost to compatriot Halep) in three sets in the first round (tough draw!), 7) Medina Garrigues fell to Errani (42 vs 43) in the second round.  Only 4 seeded players remain in the what could be the most competitive tournament of the week.

Cirstea and Medina Garrigues failed to defend their semifinals from 2009.  Vinci failed to defend her quarterfinal points, falling to 8) Suarez Navarro in the first round.  Continuing the theme, Jankovic (champion), Kanepi and Zakapalova (quarters) chose not to enter this week.

Errani is successful in her quarterfinal defence.
