Here are my thoughts on what to be looking for at the 2010 French Open on the women's side. First a little recap from 2009.
Champion - Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS)
Runner Up - Dinara Safina (RUS)
Semifinalists - Dominika Cibulkova (SVK), Samantha Stosur (AUS)
Quarterfinalists - Serena Williams (USA), Victoria Azarenka (BLR), Sorana Cirstea (ROU), Maria Sharapova (RUS)
After an all-Russian final in 2009 plus Sharapova getting to the quarters, I would not be surprised to see zero Russians in the quarterfinals this year. However, chances are one or two of them will get through.
Possible Champions: Justine Henin (BEL), Serena Williams (USA), Jelena Jankovic (SRB), Samantha Stosur (AUS). However, the way women's tennis is right now (i.e. Rome and Madrid) anyone could really win.
Other players poised to go deeper than their seed: Alexandra Dulgheru (ROU), Simona Halep (ROU), obviously Martinez Sanchez and Rezai, Anastasija Sevastova (LAT), Shahar Peer (ISR). Those are the ones most in form in my opinion but almost anyone could go deep if they draw a few players who don't play well.
Former champions in the draw: There are 4, S.Williams (2002), Henin (2003,5-7), Ivanovic (2008), and Kuznetsova (2009).
Other slam winners in the draw: V.Williams and Sharapova
Players who will really suffer rankings wise with early exits: Kuznetsova, Cibulkova, Cirstea, also Safina
