ANDY MURRAY wins his first title of the year at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, defeating Roger Federer 7-5, 7-5. Now every player in the top 6 has won a title this year. It was Murray's 15th career title. Murray came through Malisse, 15) Monfils, Nalbandian, 1) Nadal, and 3) Federer to win the title.
Federer, with his finals appearance, regains the #2 spot in the rankings from Novak Djokovic. There wasn't much other movement in the rankings primarily due to the fact that the top 4 players made the semis in 2010 and top 8 had the quarters in 2009. Roddick drops to #13 after his withdraw but barring an injury I still consider him a lock to make London because he has only 110 points to defend the rest of the year. However, his hopes for a top 8 seed at the US Open are all but gone. He needs a Cincinatti title and an early loss for Verdasco to steal #8 from the Spaniard. Nalbandian improves to #37 and inches closer to a seed in New York.
KIM CLIJSTERS win her third title of the year (WTA leading) in Cincinatti, besting Maria Sharapova, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2, saving three match points in the process. She received a fairly easy draw defeating Safina, McHale, 11) Pennetta, Ivanovic, and 10) Sharapova on her way to the title.
With the win, Clijsters moves to #4 in the rankings. This means Serena, Wozniacki, Jankovic, and Clijsters will be the top 4 seeds at the US Open since Venus and Stosur aren't competing in Cincinatti. Wozniacki reclaimed the #2 sport from Jankovic after Jelena failed miserably to defend her Cincinatti title. It would take a Jankovic Rogers Cup title and an early loss by Wozniacki for Jankovic to take the #2 ranking back. Dementieva fell two spots to #8 and is really in danger of falling out of the top 8. Sharapova is up 3 to #12 with her final appearance but that will be counteracted by her failing to defend her Rogers Cup final from 2009. Bartoli is up 3 to #17 while Pennetta drops 3 to #20. Ivanovic is back on the radar screen, up 23 to #39 while Safina falls to #70. Also of note, Amanmuradova is in the top 100, up 38 spots to #76 after her quarterfinal appearance.
