Kim Clijsters is the WTA Champion

Kim Clijsters has won the WTA Championships in Doha, Qatar, defeating world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the final in 3 tight sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.  It was the Belgian's 40th career title and 5th of her career.

We should have a good race for the no. 1 next week with Wozniacki, Zvonareva, Clijsters, and of course Serena in the mix.

The ATP had three tournaments conclude this weekend, setting a week of 500s (Basel and Valencia), then the Paris Masters before the tour finals in London and the Davis Cup.

St Petersburg, Russia

Twenty-two year old Mikhail Kukushkin (KAZ) stunned the second seed and world no. 10 (Russian #1) Mikhail Youzhny on his home turf 6-3, 7-6(2).  It is the first career title for the fast rising Kazakh.

Vienna, Austria

It was quite a match between one aging but still in form Austrian and his fast rising compatriot.  Jurgen Melzer (AUT) def. Andreas Haider-Maurer (AUT) 6-7(10), 7-6(4), 6-4.  AHM was a lucky loser, replacing Ernests Gulbis in the draw, and earlier took Soderling to 5 sets at the US Open and was a key cog in Austria's winning Davis Cup team in Israel.  Melzer successfully defends his title from 2009, and this was his 3rd career ATP win and first this year.

Montpellier

In a match that promised to be a good one, Gael Monfils (FRA) defeating the defending champion Ivan Ljubicic (CRO) 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.  Monfils defends his home soil on his way to his 3rd career title.
