So the Murray-Troicki match has been completed with Murray joining the last eight, so here is the info I provide for the men's quarterfinalists. The top 5 seeds are all still alive along with the 9, and then we have 2 unseeded quarterfinalists. This is the first time that has occurred since Hewitt and Ferrero were unseeded at the last 8 at '09 Wimbledon. It is interesting to note that in the rankings that came out last Monday, Chela was actually ranked higher than the 32nd seed Anderson. So here are the final eight with their stats:
1) Rafael Nadal (ESP): 19th slam quarterfinal (6th at French), 14-4 record (5-0), last '11 Aussie Open
2) Novak Djokovic (SRB): 16th slam quarterfinal (5th at French), 10-5 record (2-2), last '11 Aussie Open
3) Roger Federer (SUI): 32nd slam quarterfinal (8th at French), 27-4 record (5-2), last '11 Aussie Open
4) Andy Murray (GBR): 8th slam quarterfinal (2nd at French), 5-2 record (0-1), last '11 Aussie Open
5) Robin Soderling (SWE): 6th slam quarterfinal (3rd at French), 2-3 record (2-0), last '10 US Open
9) Gael Monfils (FRA): 4th slam quarterfinal (3rd at French), 1-2 record (1-1), last '10 US Open
Juan Ignacio Chela (ARG): 3rd slam quarterfinal (2nd at French), 0-2 record (0-1), last '07 US Open
Fabio Fognini (ITA): 1st slam quarterfinal
The tournament has gone mostly according to form by the this point, with the exception of those two sections of the draw where all the seeds dropped out early. But that led to nice surprising runs for Chela and Fognini. Chela had a nice year last year where he won 2 titles and has often been a tough out this year, while Fognini had a very nice clay season. It is very sad that the Italian won't be able to actual compete in his quarterfinal match. An interesting side note is that Djokovic won't get a win so he wouldn't be able to "break the streak" until his first round match at Queen's. Things are setting up nicely for a blockbuster semifinal Friday, will Soderling or Monfils do anything to prevent the top four seeds from getting to the semis?
Matchups today and tomorrow:
-Nadal vs Soderling
-Murray vs Chela
-Federer vs Monfils
-Djokovic vs Fognini (Fognini withdrew)
Top 15 in virtual rankings (to date including French points):
-Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Murray, Soderling
-Ferrer, Berdych, Monfils, Fish, Roddick
-Melzer, Troick, Gasquet, Wawrinka, Almagro
