Fish Defends Atlanta Title, Simon and Vera Also Victorious

Tennis has finally returned to North America and the USA.  The US Open series is underway with an ATP 250 tournament in Atlanta.  In an all-American final, Mardy Fish prevailed over John Isner 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-2 to win his first title of the 2011 campaign, and sixth of his career (first since winning Atlanta last year).  Fish fended off two championship points in the second set tiebreak including one on the Isner serve.  Fish becomes the fourth different American to win a single title this year, all of which have come on American soil, though on three different surfaces.

Clay action continues, however, in Europe, and this week the relatively big ATP 500 event in Hamburg, Germany was contested.  Gilles Simon came through a solid field to win his second title of the year and ninth of his career, which now seems to be revitalized.  He defeated Nicolas Almagro in the final 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.  Almagro has now won 3-250 tournaments but has now the made the final in 2-500 tournaments (Acapulco and Hamburg) but has lost.

The women had just one tournament this week, a new tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan that was attended primarily by Russians and players from other former Soviet countries.  In the end, Vera Zvonareva won her 2nd title of the year and 12th of her career, defeating compatriot Ksenia Pervak 6-1, 6-4 in the final.  Pervak, a former junior slam champion, seems to be making strides on the senior tour and will be ranked inside the top 50 after reaching her first career WTA final.
