Cincinatti Quarterfinals

No surprises on the men's side in Cincinatti, the 7th Masters tournament of the year as 7 of the top 8 seeds made the quarterfinals.  On the women's side, injuries have depleted the field but several of the big names still remain.

Men's Quarterfinalists
1) Novak Djokovic (SRB)
2) Rafael Nadal (ESP)
3) Roger Federer (SUI)
4) Andy Murray (GBR)
6) Gael Monfils (FRA)
7) Mardy Fish (USA)
8) Tomas Berdych (CZE)
10) Gilles Simon (FRA)

Djokovic, Monfish, Fish, and Berdych have successfully made the quarters (or better) at both the Rogers Cup and Cincy.  Five of the players return to the quarters of Cincy after ventures there last year:  Federer (Champ), Fish (Final), Djokovic, Nadal, and Murray (all QF).  Nadal survived Verdasco in a 3:38 long match that went to 3 tiebreaks, then lost in the doubles later, so we'll see how much he has left in the tank to take on Fish.  Ferrer lost to Simon in 3 sets today or we would have had all top 8 seeds left, and the only time that ever happened at a Masters was '09 Rogers Cup.  Due to the talent remaining, we should have a great final 3 days of this tournament.

Women's Quarterfinalists
2) Vera Zvonareva (RUS)
4) Maria Sharapova (RUS)
9) Andrea Petkovic (GER)
10) Samantha Stosur (AUS)
15) Jelena Jankovic (SRB)
16) Shuai Peng (CHN)
Daniela Hantuchova (SVK)
Nadia Petrova (RUS)

Only one quarterfinalist remains from a year ago, Sharapova the losing finalist.  Who would have thought with her inconsistency last year that she would be turning in a solid 2011 campaign and really be relevant again?  Stosur and Petkovic are the only two women who have made at least the quarters at both the Rogers Cup and Cincy this year.  Players underperforming recently have made strides here in Zvonareva and Jankovic, while Peng is continuing her career year.  It is also good to see Petrova winning again after her struggles with vertigo.  She'll be seeded at the US Open.  Also, how about young Christina McHale knocking off the world no. 1?

Quarterfinals tomorrow:
-Djokovic vs Monfils (rematch of Rogers Cup QF)
-Federer vs Berdych
-Murray vs Simon
-Nadal vs Fish
-Petkovic vs Petrova
-Jankovic vs Peng
-Sharapova vs Stosur
-Zvonareva vs Hantuchova
