Djokovic Loses *gasp*, Sharapova Wins

Novak Djokovic is now 56-2 on the year and his unbeaten hard court run is now over.  Andy Murray won the title in Cincinatti over Djokovic 6-4, 3-0 ret.  Murray won his 7th career Masters title (2nd at Cincy) and moves into a tie for 7th all time with Michael Chang.  He has now won 18 career titles of any kind.

I do not think this win by Murray/loss by Djokovic deserves an asterisk due to Djokovic's withdrawal.  Injuries are part of the game and even more so when you have played as many matches as Novak has this year.  Besides, Murray was also bothered by injury, as was his semifinal opponent Fish.  And Novak made the final without finishing his match against Berdych in the semis.  We don't know how much Djokovic's shoulder was affecting him, but Murray was up a set and 2 breaks win the world no. 1 quit.  Yes it is unfortunate, but injuries are something all players deal with from time to time.

Maria Sharapova continued her strong "comeback" year with a 4-6, 6-7(3), 6-3 win over a revived Jelena Jankovic.  She wins her second "Tier I" title of the year and will be one of the favorites in New York.  She now has 24 career titles.  Jankovic was up a set and 3-2 in the 2nd set tiebreak but then Sharapova won the next 5 points to force a deciding 3rd set.  In that set, Jankovic never held her serve and Sharapova broke her 4 times while holding just twice herself.
