While it was tempestuous week for the top players in Rogers Cup action this past week, the players we may have expected to win came through in the end: Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams.
In Montreal, the world no. 1 added to his growing list of accomplishments this year with a 6-2 3-6 6-4 win over American Mardy Fish. Here are some of those achievements:
-9 titles in 2011
-53-1 record, unbeaten on hard courts
-9 career Masters titles, now sole possession of 5th all time (just passed Muster)
-5 Masters titles in 2011, most all time
-27 career titles
So...how long will he keep this up? This is becoming a trend, not just a freaky good half-year. Is Djokovic going this good for the next 2-3 years? Will this be the best year of tennis ever? The next month will shed some light on those questions, if Djokovic can continue his success in Cincinatti and the US Open.
On the other hand, a nice tournament for the US #1 Fish. He'll move up to #7 in the world and has now hedged against his finals points he has to defend in Cincinatti this week. He also took a set of Djokovic, which no one was able to do this week.
In Toronto, Serena Williams has become the woman to beat on the WTA tour. She defeated Samantha Stosur 6-4 6-2 in the final. Williams moves up to #31 in the world so she will be seeded at the US Open, which is a relief to her competitors. Is there any reason why she isn't the favorite in New York now? She has lost sets here and there but after a year layoff this is impressive. Serena won her 39th career title in Toronto and second of the year.
And after a year of mostly bad results, Stosur may have turned the corner as she was able to reach the final in Toronto. Now we'll see if it was a week of good luck or if she can follow it up with a solid performance in either Cincinatti or the US Open.
