Federer and Serena Regain Their Crowns

It was a weekend for all-time greats at Wimbledon as Roger Federer and Serena Williams hoisted slam trophies after relatively lengthy droughts.  The former also regains the no. 1 ranking, something many thought he would never do and shows why he is in my opinion, the greatest of all time.  The latter managed to put her game back together and shows that when she is on, she is unbeatable and is best player of her generation.  And both did this at the age of 30.

Roger Federer def. Andy Murray 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4
Serena Williams def. Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1 5-7 6-2

-Federer wins his 75th career title, his 17th major (most all-time)
-Federer wins his 7th Wimbledon, tying Sampras and Renshaw (pre-open era) for most all-time
-Federer regains world no. 1, tying Sampras for weeks at no. 1 and he will break the record next week assuming Djokovic doesn't take a wildcard into an event this week
-Federer wins his 5th title of 2012, most on tour
-Major titles:  '03 Wimbledon, '04 Aussie Open, '04 Wimbledon, '04 US Open, '05 Wimbledon, '05 US Open, '06 Aussie Open, '06 Wimbledon, '06 US Open, '07 Aussie Open, '07 Wimbledon, '07 US Open, '08 US Open, '09 French Open, '09 Wimbledon, '10 Aussie Open, '12 Wimbledon
-Murray loses 4th major final, 3rd to Federer, but wins a set for the first time

-Serena wins her 42nd career title, her 14th major (6th all-time)
-Serena wins her 5th Wimbledon (ties Venus for 3rd all-time)
-Serena wins her 3rd title of 2012 (tied for 2nd on tour)
-Serena is back to no. 4 in the world, but now has played a complete season and will defend quite a few points in the upcoming hard court season
-Major titles:  '99 US Open, '02 French Open, '02 Wimbledon, '02 US Open, '03 Aussie Open, '03 Wimbledon, '05 Aussie Open, '07 Aussie Open, '08 US Open, '09 Aussie Open, '09 Wimbledon, '10 Aussie Open, '10 Wimbledon, '12 Wimbledon
-This was the first Wimbledon final to reach 3 sets since Venus def. Davenport in '05
-Seven different women have now won the last seven majors going back to Clijsters '10 US Open/'11 Aussie Open.  I again recite that eight majors were won by eight women from the '04 French Open to '06 Aussie Open.  After the French, eight women had won the last nine majors but that was not extended because Serena won '10 Wimbledon so it is now eight women have won the last ten majors.

The girls championship was won by Eugenie Bouchard (CAN).  She was ranked #9 among players born in 1994 when I last compiled my list after Miami.  Speaking of my top 10 by birth year list, I hope to compile a new edition this week.
