The top four seeds that survived the second round are through to the semis, and most went through in straightforward fashion, with only 14 sets being required over the four quarterfinal matches. Murray and Ferrer battled with the local hero prevailing 6-7 7-6 6-4 7-6 in the closest match of the day. One still would expect the winner of Djokovic/Federer to win the title, but we will find out for sure on Sunday.
On the women's side, the defending champion has been ousted from the Wimbledon, but it really is still a star-studded field remaining with the player who held no. 1 for much of the year, the solid no. 3 player and Miami champion, the player leading the tour in wins this year, and oh by the way, a woman on the short list of best female tennis players of all time. The only downside I see is that Serena and Azarenka are in the same half of the bracket so the winner of that match will be a big favorite in the final. Here are the last four in each draw with my stats...
Men
1) Novak Djokovic (SRB) - 16th major semifinal (4th at Wimbledon), 8-7 record (1-2), 9th consecutive SF
3) Roger Federer (SUI) - 32nd major semifinal (8th at Wimbledon), 23-8 record (7-0), 4th consecutive SF
4) Andy Murray (GBR) - 10th major semifinal (4th at Wimbledon), 3-6 record (0-3), last '12 Aussie Open
5) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) - 4th major semifinal (2nd at Wimbledon), 1-2 record (0-1), last '11 Wimbledon
Women
2) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) - 3rd major semifinal (2nd at Wimbledon), 1-1 record (0-1), last '12 Aussie Open
3) Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) - 1st major semifinal
6) Serena Williams (USA) - 21st major semifinal (8th at Wimbledon), 17-3 record (6-1), last '11 US Open
8) Angelique Kerber (GER) - 2nd major semifinal (1st at Wimbledon), 0-1 record, last '11 US Open
-The men have now combined for 62 major semis compared to 27 for the women. Of course over half of the men's belong to Federer.
-Azarenka is now the only woman to have not lost a set while none of the men are spotless.
-Scorelines of note Kerber def. Lisicki 6-3 6-7 7-5 and Radwanska def. Kirilenko 7-5 4-6 7-5.
-Azarenka is now the virtual world no. 1 and clinches the ranking for sure with one more win. If she loses, Radwanska can take no. 1 by winning the title.
-The Djokovic/Federer winner will finish the tournament no. 1 unless it is Federer and he loses the final.
-Djokovic and Federer have now met in the semis of 6 of the last 8 majors.
-This is the 9th consecutive major where three of the top 4 men have reached the semis.
Semifinal matchups:
Djokovic vs Federer
Murray vs Tsonga
Radwanska vs Kerber
Azarenka vs Serena
