Usually I do my best to keep the men's and women's quarterfinal posts during Masters events together, but I've give up on the women's draw. To begin with, they are planning on Monday final in Montreal so everything is a day behind, and now some of the third round women's matches have already been pushed back until tomorrow.
This has been an unlucky year for the Rogers Cup in general. First off, they have to play the week after the Olympics, so that robbed the tournaments of Federer and Serena, then poor play and injuries took out Tsonga, Murray, Azarenka, Sharapova, Del Potro, and others. Now they continue to fight weather. The men managed to finish their third round just a couple hours ago, and now the quarterfinals are underway. The women finished a couple loose matches of their second round this morning but half of the third round has now been wiped out though they are trying to get most of the quarterfinalists set today still.
But what this means is that this is a golden opportunity for an unsung hero, a surprise winner, and a chance for some lucky, and inform players, to grasp extra ranking points, prize money, and fame. Here are the remaining men in the draw:
1) Novak Djokovic (SRB)
5) Janko Tipsarevic (SRB)
8) John Isner (USA)
11) Mardy Fish (USA)
14) Richard Gasquet (FRA)
16) Milos Raonic (CAN)
Marcel Granollers (ESP)
Tommy Haas (GER)
There is the potential to be an all-Serb semi and an all-American semi. One player this really benefits is Fish, who is the defending finalist, and now it is feasible gets back there and has a rematch of last year's final against Djokovic. The real surprise among these men is Granollers, who reaches his first career Masters quarterfinal after having a very rough first few months of 2012. And what of Haas, whose comeback story continues in exceedingly wonderful fashion.
-The returning quarterfinalists from '11 are Djokovic (Champ), Fish (F), and Tipsarevic (SF). The others were Tsonga (R2 l. to Chardy), Berdych (R3 l. to Gasquet), and Monfils, Wawrinka, and Almagro (all did not play).
-Only one second round match went three sets, Berdych def. Benneteau 6-7 6-4 6-4
-The draw was only 48 players apparently due to the Olympics, so all 16 seeds received a bye. They went 11-5 in their opening matches with Tsonga, Del Potro, Simon, Nishikori, and Mayer all losing.
-Canadians are 2-3 so far with Raonic still alive after Murray pulled out. Pospisil won his opening match over Seppi while Polansky and Dancevic lost.
-The Isner QF combined with Fish's win over Monaco moves the US #1 back into the top 10. Haas is now #23 in the live rankings.
Quarterfinal matchups:
-Djokovic vs Haas
-Tipsarevic vs Granollers
-Fish vs Gasquet
-Isner vs Raonic
