Rogers Cup: Women's Quarterfinals

After the rain postponed many matches over the past couple days, the women's Premier event in Montreal finally set their quarterfinals just moments ago.  This event has also struggled to keep the players healthy as Azarenka and Sharapova have bowed out to injury and now only 5 seeds remain with only 3 of those being top 8 seeds.  There have been some big upsets and now we may have a surprising champion emerging.  Here are the remaining eight women:

2) Agnieszka Radwanska (POL)
5) Petra Kvitova (CZE)
7) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)
10) Na Li (CHN)
16) Lucie Safarova (CZE)
Roberta Vinci (ITA)
Tamira Paszek (AUT)
Alexandra Wozniak (CAN)

This tournament had some unsung quarterfinalists last year and now this year is no different.  Vinci has righted the ship after a poor most of '12.  Paszek has followed up nicely on her Wimbledon success and we may hope she won't disappear for 11 months this time around.  We may say Wozniak is all the way back the injury she had a couple years ago after she had been a top 30 player for awhile.  She is the first Canadian to reach the quarters in the Rogers Cup in 20 years.  And benefitting from a nice draw, here is Wozniacki, finally posting a good result after a long slump.  Is she on the rebound again?  Then there's Kvitova and Li, who both bombed out of the US Open in round 1 last year, playing well in North America.  And finally, solid and steady is Radwanska, who may be the new favorite.

-Radwanska (SF) and Vinci and Safarova (both QF) have successfully gotten back to the quarterfinals this year after reaching that round in '11.  Of the 5 others from '11, Serena and Petkovic didn't play, Azarenka pulled out with injury and Stosur (R3 l. to Safarova) and Voskoboeva (R2 l. to McHale lost earlier.  So 2 of the 3 surprise quarterfinalists from last year are still around.
-Two double bagels were issued in the first two rounds:  Karatantcheva over Cirstea, and Vinci over Ivanovic (gasp).
-Not only did Canada get Wozniak through to QF, but youngster Bouchard beat Peer before losing to Li.  A loss by Dubois makes the Canadian contingent 4-2 so far.
-Safarova beat Stosur in two tiebreaks to 9 and 5.
-Only Wozniacki's win over Lepchenko in the third round went 3 sets.
-Barthel played third set tiebreaks in back-to-back matches, defeating Babos before succumbing to Radwanska.
-Wozniak is now back into the top 50 and Paszek is at #36.  Li will return to the top 10 at the expense of Bartoli.

This evening's matchups:
-Kvitova vs Paszek
-Wozniacki vs Wozniak
-Safarova vs Vinci
-Radwanska vs Li
