76 years had come and gone with no British major champions, but that drought is now a thing of the past and Andy Murray won his first major title with an epic 7-6(10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 win over Novak Djokovic in nearly 5 hours in the US Open final. He becomes only the second major winner since Safin at the '05 Aussie Open other the Federer/Nadal/Djokovic monster. And after four runner-up trophies and 8 Masters wins, he finally wins a major and firmly establishes himself as a member of the elusive "Big 4".
It is his 3rd title of 2012 and 24th of his career, and he will rise to no. 3 in the new rankings. He may also be in the running for player of the year if gold medal the tiebreaker between the four players who all won majors, though he doesn't have a Masters yet this year. This the first year were there is 4 different major champs since '03 (Agassi/Ferrero/Federer/Roddick).
