Shows you what I know, right? I though Serena, Kvitova, Kerber, and Li had the best chance to go deep into this tournament and Azarenka, Radwanska, and Sharapova were a little suspect given their current form. But only one remains of the first group and only one was eliminated from the second group. Three of the top four seeds are still alive in the draw and there are no unseeded players. The last women's major where all eight quarterfinalists were seeded was the '11 Aussie Open.
Here are the last eight on the women's side:
1) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) - 8th major quarterfinal (1st at the US Open), 3-4 record, 2nd consecutive QF
3) Maria Sharapova (RUS) - 18th major quarterfinal (3rd at the US Open), 14-3 record (2-0), last '12 French Open
4) Serena Williams (USA) - 34th major quarterfinal (10th at the US Open), 21-12 record (6-3), 2nd consecutive QF
7) Samantha Stosur (AUS) - 6th major quarterfinal (3rd at the US Open), 4-1 record (1-1), last '12 French Open
10) Sara Errani (ITA) - 3rd major quarterfinal (1st at the US Open), 1-1 record, last '12 French Open
11) Marion Bartoli (FRA) - 5th major quarterfinal (1st at the US Open), 2-2 record, last '11 Wimbledon
12) Ana Ivanovic (SRB) - 6th major quarterfinal (1st at the US Open), 4-1 record, last '08 French Open
20) Roberta Vinci (ITA) - 1st major quarterfinal, '12 Wimbledon was her first 4th round appearance
-Despite the fact that most of these women have been to a good number of quarterfinals, for 5 of them it is their first appearance in a US Open QF.
-Altogether they have now combined for 81 major quarterfinals. That may give the men a run for their money given that Nadal is out of the draw.
-Hard to believe that since Ivanovic played Jankovic for the #1 ranking at the '08 French Open, before today they had combined to reach 2 major QF (both Jankovic at '08 US Open (F) and '10 French Open (SF)). Ivanovic did however make 6 fourth round appearances.
-Errani has pretty much taken over from where Schiavone left off after '11 French Open when her level fell off considerably. Schiavone made 2 French Open finals and a smattering of other quarterfinals and now Errani has made a French Open final and 2 other quarterfinals.
-Azarenka will clinch no. 1 with a win in her QF, if she loses Sharapova must win the title. Errani is currently no. 8 and Wozniacki has fallen out of the top 10 and there is a real possibility she will miss the year end championships.
-Serena handed a double bagel to Hlavackova in their fourth round match.
Tomorrow and Wednesday's quarters:
-Azarenka vs Stosur
-Sharapova vs Bartoli
-Serena vs Ivanovic
-Errani vs Vinci (doubles partners)
At this point it looks like Serena has a clear path to the final as the more dangerous players are all in the top half. I am surprised to Bartoli this far but really any of those women I could see in the final.
