US Open: Men's Quarterfinals/Women's Semifinals

So the rain messes with the US Open again and let's this is all the disturbance it will cause.  This post will cover the men's quarters and women's semis since the rain squished the schedule a bit.  Even without Nadal, the top four men's seeds are through to the quarters along with three other top 8 seeds, an incredible domination by the top men.  Only Tsonga is missing after his second round stumble against Klizan.

Here are the men's quarterfinalists:
1) Roger Federer (SUI) - 38th major quarterfinal (9th at the US Open), 32-5 record (8-0), 34th consecutive QF
2) Novak Djokovic (SRB) - 22nd major quarterfinal (6th at the US Open), 16-5 record (5-0), 14th consecutive QF
3) Andy Murray (GBR) - 14th major quarterfinal (3rd at the US Open), 10-3 record (2-0), 8th consecutive QF
4) David Ferrer (ESP) - 9th major quarterfinal (2nd at the US Open), 3-5 record (1-0), 4th consecutive QF
6) Tomas Berdych (CZE) - 6th major quarterfinal (1st at the US Open), 2-3 record, last '12 Aussie Open
7) Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG) - 7th major quarterfinal (3rd at the US Open), 2-4 record (1-1), last '12 French Open
8) Janko Tipsarevic (SRB) - 2nd major quarterfinal (2nd at the US Open), 0-1 record (0-1), last '11 US Open
12) Marin Cilic (CRO) - 3rd major quarterfinal (2nd at the US Open), 1-1 record (0-1), last '10 Aussie Open

-The consistency of the top players continues to impress, and look at the US Open QF records.  The quarterfinalists this year are a combined 17-3 in US Open QF and the top 4 seeds are 16-0!
-These players have now combined to reach 101 major quarterfinals, a bit better then the 81 put up by the women.
-Half of these men were here last year:  Federer, Djokovic, Murray, and Tipsarevic
-Federer has no. 1 through the US Open no matter what, Murray can take no. 3 from Nadal by reaching the final.
-Berdych has now reached the QF round of every major, he is the 3rd Czech to do so (Lendl and Korda)
-What of Ferrer, who has now reached all four major quarters this year?  More than a clay-court specialist for sure.

Quarterfinal matchups:
-Federer vs Berdych
-Murray def. Cilic
-Ferrer vs Tipsarevic
-Djokovic vs Del Potro

The women had a couple of fabulous matches and a couple of duds in the quarterfinals today and yesterday.  Azarenka survived Stosur 7-5 in the 3rd set tiebreak and Sharapova trailed Bartoli 4-0 when play was suspended for rain yesterday but came back to win in 3 sets.  Three of top four seeds are through to the semis and this Italian who people keep righting off (myself included) but she just keeps on winning.

Here are the women's semifinalists:
1) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) - 4th major semifinal (1st at the US Open), 1-2 record, 2nd consecutive SF
3) Maria Sharapova (RUS) - 15th major semifinal (3rd at the US Open), 7-7 record (1-1), last '12 French Open
4) Serena Williams (USA) - 22nd major semifinal (7th at the US Open), 18-3 record (5-1), 2nd consecutive SF
10) Sara Errani (ITA) - 2nd major semifinal (1st at the US Open), 1-0 record, last '12 French Open

-These women have now combined for 43 major semis.  Again, we will compare that with the men tomorrow where they may have a fighting chance with both Serena and Sharapova still alive.
-Azarenka has now clinched the no. 1 ranking through the US Open, Errani is up no. 7 in the live rankings, and the top 5 will be Azarenka, Sharapova, Radwanska, Williams, Kvitova.  If Errani upsets Serena, she will get to no. 6.

Friday's matchups:
-Azarenka vs Sharapova
-Williams vs Errani

I don't see how one picks against Serena here and I like Azarenka over Sharapova.
