The British Wait Is Over, Bartoli Wins First Major

It had been 77 years since Fred Perry won Wimbledon as the last British man to do so, but Andy Murray ended that futility, sending Centre Court into ecstasy.

Andy Murray def. Novak Djokovic 6-4 7-5 6-4

-Murray wins 28th career title, 4th of 2013, last '13 London (Queen's)
-It is his 5th grass court title
-It is his 2nd major ('12 US Open)
-He has an 18-match grass court winning streak including 13 straight wins at Wimbledon (counting the Olympics)
-He is the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years
-He pulls within 3000 points of Djokovic in the rankings
-Djokovic has qualified for the World Tour Finals (Nadal already has)

Murray now looks like the frontrunner going into the US Open series after this straight sets win over Djokovic.  One would expect Nadal to fade as the tour turns to hard courts and Federer seemingly has issues with his game.  It looks like Djokovic and Murray may become a big rivalry and at this point it would be a surprise to seem someone other than them in the US Open final.  Djokovic still has the advantage looking towards year end no. 1 as Murray has a number of points to defend through the US Open, though Djokovic had a profitable fall.  The year's first 3 majors have been split.  Can one of the three break the tie at the US Open or will Federer (or another) win in New York to make it a second consecutive year with four different winners?

Marion Bartoli def. Sabine Lisicki 6-1 6-4

-Bartoli wins 8th career title, last '11 Osaka
-It is her 2nd grass court title
-It is her first major title
-She is the first Frenchwoman to win a major since Mauresmo at '06 Wimbledon
-She is the first woman to win her first major since Azarenka at the '12 Aussie Open.  Prior to that there was four consecutive first time winners
-She moves up to no. 7 in the world and should be able to make the year end championships

Bartoli pulls off a Schiavone-esque run to a major championship, and managed to navigate the draw without playing someone ranked above her.  But in that sense, she took care of business and won the title without losing a set.  (That is the 10th time that has happened at Wimbledon in the open era.)  Now it will be interesting to see where will from here.  Serena lost.  Sharapova lost to a qualifier.  Azarenka is injured.  Radwanska played well but got outdueled by Lisicki.  Players like Bartoli, Stephens, Lisicki, Li, and Kanepi are rising.  Who can regain momentum as the tour shifts to America?  Can these hot players keep up there good form?  Or will the top 3 or 4 refind their game and get back to dominating?

Personally, I am very happy for Bartoli winning this title.  I enjoyed watching some of her quirks and she is quite the character.  She's had success in very limited amounts but when on her game, can beat just about anyone.  She is "young" enough to still take her game to another level and win more majors. But will she, or will she become a one-slam wonder and enjoy a top 10 ranking for a year or two before dipping down into obscurity?  Allez Marion!
