The BNP Paribas Open (aka Indian Wells) began this week:
This is of course an ATP Masters 1000 tournament for the men and WTA Premier Mandatory for the women.
-Rafael Nadal and Vera Zvonareva are the defending champions. What are the chances of Zvonareva defending those points? This means she will likely fall further in the rankings.
-Andy Murray and Ana Ivanovic (good luck) will be defending finals points.
-Last year's semifinalists were Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Victoria Azarenka, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
-Players with quarterfinals to defend are Del Potro, Verdasco, Djokovic, and Ljubicic for the men; Safina, Wozniacki, Radwanska, and Bammer for the women. Some of those are out with injury (Safina and Del Potro) so they will obviously not defend.
With the Williams sisters absent I think it is safe to say a Belgian or (Bela)Russian will win on the men's side. Caroline, can you prove me wrong?
The men's side is a little up in the air due to quite a few injuries.
(This will be a typical tournament preview post, talking primarily about who has points to defend since this blog will be more results based than prediction based.)
