David Goffin (Metz), Ana Ivanovic (Tokyo), Karolina Pliskova (Seoul), and Monica Niculescu (Guangzhou) were the champions this week. For Ivanovic, it is her 4th title of the year, second only to Serena on the WTA, Pliskova wins her 2nd career title, and Goffin continues his hot streak winning his 2nd title of the year.
In Guangzhou, a pair of 20-yr-old Chinese ranked near 250 reached their first WTA quarterfinals: Kai-Lin Zhang and Yafan Wang. Wang would beat Zhang in the quarters and reach her first semi. The Americans women had a small resurgence in Seoul. Lepchenko, McHale, and Gibbs all reached the quarters (for Gibbs it was her first WTA quarterfinal). McHale and Lepchenko then played in the semis and the match to a 3rd set tiebreak before Lepchenko won to reach the final, where she fell to Pliskova. Kirilenko enjoyed a nice resurgence as well in Seoul, reaching her first quarter of the year and the semis, where she too lost to Pliskova.
