If you didn't believe that anything could happen in Davis Cup, now you know that ANYTHING can really happen. David Nalbandian leading Argentina past Russia in Moscow by beating two top 15 players Davydenko and Youzhny after playing very little tennis in the past year and a half. Also Michael Llodra beating Fernando Verdasco. This sets up two good semis, Argentina @ France and Czech Republic @ Serbia.
In other zonal competition, Great Britain blasted Turkey on the grass at Queen's Club to remain in zonal group II. Other countries weren't so fortunate. The following nations have been demoted:
To Europe or Africa Zonal Group III: Egypt, Macedonia, Norway, Turkey (they will be replaced by Morocco, Tunisia, Greece, and Luxembourg)
To Asia/Pacific Zonal Group III: Malaysia and Sri Lanka (they will be replaced by Iran and Syria)
To Americas Zonal Group III: Bolivia and Guatemala or Netherlands Antilles (they will finish today). They'll be replaced by Puerto Rico and Haiti
Also some zonal group promotion finals were set up to include:
Lithuania vs. Slovenia and Portugal vs. Bosnia for spots in Europe/Africa Zonal Group I
Venezuela vs. Mexico for a spot in Americas Zonal Group I
Thailand vs. New Zealand for a spot in Asia/Pacific Zonal Group I
Relegation ties were also set up in Zonal Group I to relegate nations to their respective Zonal Group II
Europe/Africa: Slovakia vs. Belarus, Poland vs. Latvia
Americas: Dominican Republic vs. Canada
Asia/Pacific: Philippines vs. South Korea
While I am posting, I would also like to congratulate Mardy Fish, Agnes Szavay, and Aravane Rezai on their titles this past weekend.
