The quarterfinal field is set in Tokyo (due to the 14 hour time difference as well as the fact the final will be on Saturday), the women's Premier 5 event, with 900 points to the winner. Six of the top eight seeds have gone through and it seems like maybe (at least temporarily) many of the top players have "righted the ship".
1) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)
2) Vera Zvonareva (RUS)
5) Francesca Schiavone (ITA)
6) Agnieszka Radwanska (POL)
7) Elena Dementieva (RUS)
8) Victoria Azarenka (BLR)
Kaia Kanepi (EST)
Q) Coco Vandeweghe (USA)
Congratulations to Azarenka for defending her quarterfinal points from 2009. The only other remaining quarterfinalist from 2009 is Radwanska who made the semis. The defending champion Sharapova lost in the first round to Date Krumm, the defending finalist Jankovic lost in the 3rd round to Kanepi (deja vu), the other semifinalist Li withdrew. Benesova and Rybarikova (quarters last year) weren't in the main draw while Bartoli had to retire to Azarenka in the third round so she just missed defending by one round. Also a shout out to the young American, Coco Vandeweghe, who has made her first WTA quarterfinal.
Jankovic will drop to #8 in the rankings unless Radwanska or Dementieva wins the title in which case she falls to #9. Li will fall to around #15 and Sharapova to about #22.
Tonight's (or tomorrow's) quarterfinal matches:
Wozniacki vs Radwanska
Azarenka vs Vandeweghe
Schiavone vs Kanepi
Zvonareva vs Dementieva
