The final is set in Tokyo, with one player continuing her good form of the last few tournaments and another getting hot and really playing well. It should be a good final.
1) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) vs. 7) Elena Dementieva (RUS)
Wozniacki is going for her 5th title of 2010 (11th of her career), Dementieva for her 3rd title this year (though her last was in February) and 16th in her career. Dementieva will be trying to take the #8 ranking spot from Jankovic, while a Wozniacki would all be assure her of the year end #1 ranking.
In Bangkok, only one seed in left in the draw by the semis, and that is the world no. 1:
1) Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP)
Jarkko Nieminen (FIN) vs. Benjamin Becker (GER)
Verdasco was knocked out by Becker in R2, Gulbis lost to Garcia-Lopez in the QFs, Melzer lost to Nieminen in the QFs, etc.
Verdasco won't lose any points because Bangkok wasn't even being counted among his 250s. Simon will lose the points he gained by winning in Nice. Nadal stands to gain a few points with a title here.
In Kuala Lumpur, the seeds have had better success but not the top players:
5) David Ferrer (ESP) vs. 8) Andrey Golubev (KAZ)
4) Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) vs. Q) Igor Andreev (RUS)
Soderling was beaten by Golubev in the QFs, Berdych lost to Ferrer in the QFs, Baghdatis lost to Youzhny in the QFs, and Davydenko was toppled by Andreev in R2.
It looks like Andreev has gotten over his injuries and is on the way back up. Davydenko loses 205 points by failing to defend here, likely beginning his free fall with Shanghai and WTF points to defend. Ferrer continues to roll, he has a good shot at the WTF this year. Youzhny also continues to play well and could possibly play himself into London.
I combined all the 2009 slam summaries into one page for an archive, I have updated the country slam summary page and will get the others updated before two long. Russia has managed six different quarterfinalists in each of the last two seasons. See the pages for other cool stuff.
