The Davis Cup final begins tomorrow, with Spain hosting Argentina on clay in Seville. This is a rematch of the 2008 final, when Spain won at Argentina without Nadal and Fernando Verdasco was the hero. In my opinion, Spain is the overwhelming favorite but the Argentines do have a slight chance at emerging victorious.
Spain enters with their two top 5 singles players Nadal and Ferrer while Argentina has countered with Del Potro and Monaco, who have both enjoyed a moderate amount of recent. Nalbandian/Schwank will meet Verdasco/Lopez in the doubles where the visitors should have a big advantage as the Spanish team has been downright horrible on the tour this year and won only 3 games against France in the semis. (Honestly if I was Spanish captain Albert Costa I may have selected two other players for doubles.) Argentine captain Tito Vazquez chose Monaco (who beat Ferrer in Valencia) over Nalbandian (who leads his head to head against Nadal) for at least the opening singles rubber.
There are ways to envision Argentina winning this tie, but I'm not seeing it. I do say though that Del Potro gets one win and they take the doubles. That means Ferrer beats Monaco or Nalbandian in a live fifth rubber and Spain wins yet another Davis Cup.
