Rafael Nadal clinched the Davis Cup for Spain in the fourth rubber, defeating Argentina and Juan Martin Del Potro 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-6(0). Spain wins its 5th DC since 2004 while Argentina loses its fourth final without ever winning one.
Nadal easily beat Juan Monaco in the opener, but then Del Potro had David Ferrer on the hopes. But any legitimate shot the Argentines had to win the tie evaporated along with Del Potro break advantage in the 4th set. Ferrer came back to win in 5, setting up Nadal to clinch after Nalbandian/Schwank beat Verdasco/Lopez in straight sets in the doubles.
On clay, Spain in unbeatable, due to these stats I've dug up.
-Nadal and Ferrer are a combined 28-0 on clay (Nadal 16-0, Ferrer 12-0) in singles
-Nadal has lost just 7 sets in Davis Cup singles competition, and is 20-1 overall in rubbers. He lost his very first match, on carpet to Jiri Novak in 2004. Since then, he is 20-0 dropping just 4 sets (Andreas Seppi, Sam Querrey, Andy Roddick, and now Del Potro).
Vamos Espana!
And now, Doha, Chennai, and Brisbane are just 4 weeks away. The Australian Open begins in 42 days.
