With all the talk of upsets at the '14 French Open, most of the chaos is on the women's. There are now only two top 10 players remaining in the draw after Errani dismissed Jankovic. This is very wide open for the last 3 rounds of a major and I'm not quite sure what will happen, similar to last year's Wimbledon where Bartoli beat Lisicki in the final. On the men's side, the two leading Swiss have been eliminated but they were only top 8 seeds sent packing. The six others are intact but admittedly the draw looks a little open without Wawrinka and Federer. Of the younger players who had good lead ins to this tournament, Raonic and Gulbis are still alive and we'll find out if they can threaten the established Djokovic and Berdych. But without further ado, here are the final eight in each draw:
Men
1) Rafael Nadal (ESP) - 22nd major quarterfinal (9th at the FO), 17-4 record (8-0), 3rd consecutive QF
2) Novak Djokovic (SRB) - 28th major quarterfinal (8th at the FO), 21-6 record (5-2), 20th consecutive QF
5) David Ferrer (ESP) - 15th major quarterfinal (5th at the FO), 6-8 record (2-2), 10th consecutive QF
6) Tomas Berdych (CZE) - 10th major quarterfinal (2nd at the FO), 4-5 record (1-0), 2nd consecutive QF
7) Andy Murray (GBR) - 19th major quarterfinal (4th at the FO), 13-5 record (1-2), 4th consecutive QF (13th that he has played)
8) Milos Raonic (CAN) - 1st major quarterfinal!
18) Ernests Gulbis (LAT) - 2nd major quarterfinal (2nd at the FO), 0-1 record (0-1), last '08 French Open (6-yr drought)
23) Gael Monfils (FRA) - 5th major quarterfinal (4th at the FO), 1-3 record (1-2), last '11 French Open (3-yr drought)
-Only Nadal has yet to lose a set.
-The men have now combined to reach 102 major quarterfinals
-Seven different countries are represented. There are two Spaniards.
-Raonic is the first Canadian men to reach a major quarterfinal
-Only Nadal, Djokovic, and Ferrer remain from the '13 quarterfinalists. Those failing to get back here were Tsonga (R4 l. to Djokovic), Wawrinka (R1 l. to Garcia-Lopez), Federer (R4 l. to Gulbis), Haas (R1 ret. vs Zopp), and Robredo (R3 l. to Isner).
-Ferrer has currently dropped to no. 7 in the live rankings behind Berdych and Murray. The top 4 are unchanged. Gulbis is up to no. 13 and Monfils to no. 20. If Djokovic wins one more match, Nadal must win the title to stay at no. 1.
-Sock unfortunately fell to Lajovic in the third round, Young lost to Garcia-Lopez at the same stage, but Isner put in a big performance against Robredo before falling in straight sets to Berdych in the round of 16. He was the first American to reach the fourth round since Ginepri 4 years ago. The American men finish with an encouraging 9-8 record.
I still think we are in line for a Nadal/Djokovic final. It would especially be a shocker to see Nadal lose to Ferrer, Murray, or Monfils. I think Gulbis has a decent chance to upset Berdych but the Czech has been very good under the radar at this tournament. Raonic may give Djokovic a good match but I would be surprised if he beat him so unless Djokovic has an off day he should make the final. And I'm still going to pick Nadal in Paris until he proves me wrong.
Matchups:
-Nadal vs Ferrer
-Murray vs Monfils
-Berdych vs Gulbis
-Djokovic vs Raonic
Women
4) Simona Halep (ROU) - 2nd major quarterfinal (1st at the FO), 0-1 record, 2nd consecutive QF
7) Maria Sharapova (RUS) - 21st major quarterfinal (8th at the FO), 17-3 record (4-3), last '13 French Open
10) Sara Errani (ITA) - 5th major quarterfinal (3rd at the FO), 3-1 record (2-0), last '13 French Open
14) Carla Suarez Navarro (ESP) - 4th major quarterfinal (2nd at the FO), 0-3 record (0-1), last '13 US Open
18) Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) - 2nd major quarterfinal (1st at the FO), 1-0 record, 2nd consecutive QF
27) Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) - 15th major quarterfinal (7th at the FO), 5-9 record (3-3), last '13 French Open
28) Andrea Petkovic (GER) - 4th major quarterfinal (2nd at the FO), 0-3 record (0-1), last '11 US Open
Garbine Muguruza (ESP) - 1st major quarterfinal!
-Halep and Muguruza are the women who have dropped a set
-The women have now combined to reach 54 major quarterfinals
-There are just six different countries represented with two Russians and two Spaniards
-Sharapova, Errani, and Kuznetsova were all in the quarters last year. Those failing to get back here were Serena (R2 l. to Muguruza), Radwanska (R3 l. to Tomljanovic), Azarenka (w/d), Jankovic (R4 l. to Errani), and Kirilenko (R1 l. to Larsson)
-There really hasn't been a ton of movement in the live rankings so far though Sharapova and Errani have slipped to nos. 12 and 13 with all their points to defend. Kuznetsova has successfully defending all her points from last year so she's back to no. 29 but behind Muguruza who has risen to no. 27 while Petkovic is up to no. 23.
-The Americans finished up decent after the poor start. Townsend was eliminated by Suarez Navarro but Stephens won another match over Makarova before falling in straight sets to Halep. This put the American women's record at 10-14 which is worse than I would have liked to see.
This really could be an unpredictable 5 days for the women. Sharapova is the heavy favorite but it certainly wouldn't be shocking to see her exit, though I think her experience should give her an advantage over Muguruza, or any of the younger players in her half for that matter. On the other side, I like the Halep/Kuznetsova winner to advance to final, though I'm not counting the little Italian that could. Petkovic has rode a nice draw to this point but I don't think she can hang Errani. I will predict Sharapova to win but it's not a sure thing, especially if it is indeed Halep or Kuznetsova in the final.
Matchups:
-Sharapova vs Muguruza
-Suarez Navarro vs Bouchard
-Halep vs Kuznetsova
-Errani vs Petkovic
