French Open: Semifinals

It was a fairly calm quarterfinal round of the tournament with minor upsets by Petkovic and Gulbis over Errani and Berdych.  Gulbis is certainly the on fire player at the moment (remember he won in Nice so he is now on a 10-match winning streak).  Petkovic is an interesting case and she has almost come from nowhere to reach the quarters and then take a women who had reached the semis or better at the French Open the last 2 years.  Nadal, Djokovic, Halep, and Sharapova all progressed but we'll see if they're able to win again to the final.  Here are the semifinalists:

Men
1) Rafael Nadal (ESP) - 17th major semifinal (4th at the AO), 13-3 record (2-1), 2nd consecutive SF
2) Novak Djokovic (SRB) - 22nd major semifinal (6th at the FO), 12-9 record (1-4), last '13 US Open
7) Andy Murray (GBR) - 14th major semifinal (2nd at the FO), 7-6 record (0-1), last '13 Wimbledon
18) Ernests Gulbis (LAT) - 1st major semifinal!

-The men have now combined to reach 52 major semis
-Everyone has lost at least one set now that Ferrer just took a set off him
-Nadal and Djokovic remain from those who made the semis last year
-Gulbis will enter the top 10 for the first time.  Murray has returned to the top 5.  Ferrer drops to no. 7 with his loss.

I will stick with the Nadal/Djokovic final although I think it is possible that Gulbis could threaten Djokovic.  Murray has been playing well to survive Monfils and Kohlschreiber but I don't think he'll beat Nadal, though I think he could give him a decent match.

Matchups:
-Nadal vs Federer
-Berdych vs Wawrinka

Women
4) Simona Halep (ROU) - 1st major semifinal!
7) Maria Sharapova (RUS) - 18th major semifinal (5th at the FO), 2-2 record, last '13 French Open
18) Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) - 2nd major semifinal (1st at the FO), 0-1 record, 2nd consecutive SF
28) Andrea Petkovic (GER) - 1st major semifinal

-The women have now combined to reach 22 major semis, although Sharapova will have over 4 times more appearances than the other women put together.
-Halep has still yet to drop a set.
-With Errani's loss, Sharapova is now the only player to reach the semis last year and this year.
-If Halep reaches the final, she will pass Radwanska to get to no.3 in the world.  Sharapova is currently at no. 10 but a win would mean defending her points and would vault her back to no. 6, which is important with Wimbledon coming up.  Bouchard is up to no. 12 and Petkovic to no. 20.

I am sticking with Sharapova, especially after her fighting spirit recovered from dropping the first set 6-1 to Muguruza.  She has the experience although Bouchard did play a semi in Australia.  I think Halep can handle Petkovic but then again I thought Errani could handle her too.  Don't discount the German here, that could be a good semi to see who plays in their first major final.

Matchups:
-Sharapova vs Bouchard
-Halep vs Petkovic
